National Sowing Day at Markthal
Geschreven door Markthal

On Wednesday 22 April, Markthal joins the nationwide celebration of National Sowing Day — a moment when the Netherlands reflects on the importance of biodiversity and the vital role of bees. Bees and butterflies pollinate a large part of the food we eat. Without them, many fruits, vegetables and herbs simply wouldn’t grow. That’s why we’re putting them in the spotlight — right here in the heart of the city.
Anyone walking through Markthal knows that nature and food already come together under our roof. The Horn of Plenty, the iconic artwork that covers the ceiling, is filled with flowers, plants and insects. It’s a colourful tribute to growth, harvest and the richness of nature. National Sowing Day fits seamlessly with that story: we celebrate what grows.
On Wednesday afternoon, visitors will receive a seed paper card — sustainable paper embedded with seeds that support bees, butterflies and other pollinators. At home, the card can be planted to create a small patch of flowers, whether on a balcony, in a garden or on a sunny windowsill.
With this simple gesture, we hope to show that everyone can contribute to a greener, more vibrant environment. Together, we make Rotterdam bloom.
