Markthal

Ecology

By building more environmentally consciously, we can contribute to the preservation of natural ecosystems and biodiversity. That is why Markthal has provided space for a number of bat and swift roosts

Bat roosts integrated into the building

On the 11th floor of the west facade of the Markthal, four bat roosts have been integrated into the cavity, with only a 2 cm high and 18 cm wide flight opening visible. These roosts are intended for urban bats such as the common pipistrelle. Placed on the sunny side and high in the facade, they offer a warm and quiet place for summer, mating and winter roosts for the bats.

Wall-mounted Swift roosts

On the first floor of the north façade, ten swift roosts are attached to the wall, visible from the Grotemarkt side. These nest boxes offer swifts a breeding place, as suitable cavities in buildings are scarce. Swifts only stay on their nests for a short time and eat up to 20,000 insects a day, which increases their ecological value.
